If you want a job in the data center industry, start here.
This branch skips the background theory and goes directly to the actionable path. Which steps, in which order, at what cost, producing what result.
Articles in This Branch
Minimum Viable Path
The fastest path from zero to a data center job. Three certifications, one target employer type, three to six months. Cost: $150–$500. Entry wage: $18–$26/hr.
Trades to Data Center
If you already have a trades background (electrical, HVAC, plumbing, construction), you are closer than you think. How to map your existing skills to data center roles and what certifications close the gap.
Veteran Pathway
MOS translation, SkillBridge program, Microsoft Military Datacenter Pathway (11 weeks, SkillBridge-eligible), Helmets to Hardhats. Foundation-level veteran guide.

Drug Testing & Background Checks
The honest version: zero-tolerance including marijuana even in legal states, what a 10-panel screen tests for, what background check levels to expect, and how federal facility clearance requirements work.
EHS & Construction Safety Careers
The safety-staff path from the trades: OSHA 30 → CHST (no degree required) → site safety roles on hyperscale builds. Verified Mortenson data center postings ($89.5K–$205K ladder) and BLS wage data for safety specialists and technicians.
The Traveling Data Center Worker
Following the boom from project to project: the IBEW Book 1/Book 2 traveler system, per diem reality (GSA CONUS $178/day as the de facto benchmark), verified traveling postings ($50/hr + per diem at 65–75 hrs/week), staffing agencies that place travelers, and the sourced downsides.
The Short Answer (If You Have 2 Minutes)
For someone with no data center experience:
- OSHA 10 General Industry ($150, one weekend)
- Apply to FM contractors (BGIS, ABM, JLL) operating near the construction site — not to the hyperscaler directly
- Get NFPA 70E and EPA 608 during your first 90 days
- After 12–18 months, you are competitive for a full CFT role at $55,000–$85,000
For someone with a trades background (electrician, HVAC, plumber):
- Get OSHA 10 General Industry (even if you have Construction)
- Get NFPA 70E if you do not have it
- Apply to hyperscaler or colo operations roles directly — your trades background qualifies you for mid-level entry
- Expect an entry salary of $55,000–$75,000 with trades background and no data center experience
